French Adrian helmet was bought from an old farmer in the region of Verdun.
The helmet is placed on a french trench art brass with leaves, poppy decoration and in the front the name of 'Morsain'. Casque français acheté chez un vieux fermier près de Verdun. Le casque est placé sur un obus joliment gravé avec des coquelicots et devant le nom du village 'Morsain'. Peut-être un endroit proche du coeur du soldat qui les a faits. I bought this damaged French Artillery helmet on my last visit at Verdun and the Douaumont fortress on a brocante market in the region. I used uroboros glass in blue and brown tones to form a beautiful whole between the past and present.
I decorated the helmet with cornflowers (Bleuet de France), the French answer to the remembrance poppys. The shell case has a central design of oak leaves and acorns and the word 'VERDUN' which is all well executed. Much of the more complex Trench Art was made behind the lines during recuperation or after the war where soldiers had access to better tools. This one is simpler and possibly therefore hand done in the trenches. It was found by the owner of Clare's Vintage in Northern East France. The Battle of Verdun was one of the major battles of WW 1 on the French sector of the line. Measures: height: 42 cm weight: 2,7 kg |

I found the helmet in a brocante store in the north of France. Also the antique trench art artillery shell which is beautifully decorated with floral decor and the word 'ARRAS'. The helmet is completed with green/brown uroboros glass with a poppy in the front and a shellbullet as heart. The Battle of Arras was a major British offensive during the First World War. From 9th April to 16th May 1917, troops from the four corners of the British Empire attacked trenches held by the army of Imperial Germany to the east of the French city. Measures; height: 40 cm wide: 28 cm weight: 3 kg |

I got my inspiration for making this piece after seeing the British drama film 'TESTAMENT OF YOUTH' (directed by James Kent) based on the First World War memoir of the same name written by Vera Brittain. I used a button from an officer's jacket from The Worcestershire regiment, the corps of Lieutenant Roland Leighton (+23/12/1915 - age 19 - British cemetery Louvencourt - France) as well as forest violets blooming in Plug Street Wood. Violets which he picked from the top of his dug-out and sent them to his love Vera Brittain. He wrote the famous poem 'VILLANELLE' on this subject. Violets from Plug Street Wood, Sweet, I send you oversea. (It is strange they should be blue, Blue, when his soaked blood was red, For they grew around his head: It is strange they should be blue.) Violets from Plug Street Wood Think what they have meant to me............ Measures: height: 41 cm weight: 3,4 kg SOLD |
